So we're finally here, halfway through second semester, and I'm happy. The last two weeks have been pretty good in that they've been
a) Productive and
b) I've had a good time
Six days ago I handed in my essay for my Cinema & Psychoanalysis module. I'd looked at The Wrestler and the concept of phantasy, more specifically, was Freud's concept of the ambitious and erotic wishes correct? I got really into it and ended up emailing my tutor asking him what the absolute maximum word count was, because I couldn't possibly stick to the 1500 that had been set. He told me that it was 1760, and I struggled to even fit all my ideas into that.
I do have more assignments this semester (four, to be exact), but I'm not too worried as they're all creative pieces (so no holing myself up in the library drinking Relentless, yay) and I already have an idea of what I'm going to do for each, so I'm going to try and get them finished over Easter so that I don't have to worry about them when I go back to uni. Plus, I enjoy the creative writing side of my course. I'd be writing short stories and whatnot anyway so I may as well be getting some credit for it!
My boyfriend went on holiday a couple of weeks ago, so aside from being worried sick that he'd snowboarded off a cliff every day, I actually had a good week without him because it gave me a chance to get up to speed with my work and go home to visit my mum (for the first time in forever!). Anyway, now he's back and we've been making up for lost time. In the week that he's been back, we've gone for sushi and to see Side Effects at the cinema, been to Sound Control for our friend's birthday night out, watched some brilliant films (I am still in love with Hannibal Lecter) and we've even made arrangements for him to come and stay with my family over the Easter weekend (meeting everyone, ooh).
Restaurants are something I've been seeing a lot of. I went to an Italian with my mum last weekend, and ordered my steak blue. The chef actually came out and congratulated me for being the first customer he's seen in ages to ask for it cooked properly! I also went to Wasabi (twice in a week, oops) and it's gone up in my estimation. I used to prefer Yo! Sushi as I love the whole disgusting raw fish side of sushi, but Wasabi do a gorgeous chicken katsu curry with sticky rice, AND three plates off the belt for £8.50. I'm hooked (excuse the pun, haha). I also discovered Panama Hatty's on a girlie catch up with Heather. We got the set menu, which was two courses for £12 (the average price of a main is around £13 so we did pretty well!). It was beautiful. I got a Stilton and mushroom bake to start and a smoked salmon risotto for my main, while Heather went for potato skins and Thai fish cakes with sweet potato fries. I can't recommend it enough, it really is gorgeous!
Some other things I'm into at the minute?
I've just finished reading The Bell Jar which is a lovely read. It's the partly autobiographical novel written by Sylvia Plath, not long before she committed suicide, and though it's about something very sad, the quirky narrative stops it from being too depressing. I also read The Kiss which is a memoir by Kathryn Harrison about her incestuous relationship with her father. It's obviously not a nice read but it was something I couldn't put down. What is it about tragic lives that has us running to books like a vulture to a carcass? To cheer me up, after I finished that I started to read A Street Cat Named Bob which I won't say too much about because I'll be reviewing it after it's finished, but cats!
Films, I watched Red Dragon again, as well as The Devil's Advocate (again!), Mama (worth a watch but not brilliant), Side Effects (worth a watch and kind of brilliant), Grave Encounters 2 (probably not worth a watch) and The Girl about Hitchcock (definitely worth a watch). I've also been racing through season 4 of Gossip Girl, and it's pretty safe to say that my life revolves around it. Guess it's a good job I've got two and a half seasons left to go! Tried to get the boyfriend into it but we've agreed to start watching The Following with Kevin Bacon instead. It's about serial killers so it's my kind of thing.
Which brings me onto my next point. Crime documentaries. Why have I never discovered them before? Me and my mum spent a weekend watching documentaries about Ted Bundy, Carol Bundy, Dennis Nilson, you name it, and I now share my mother's obsession with serial killers. I already knew a lot of them because I've borrowed her books on occassion, but it didn't stop them from being fantastic viewing. Psychopaths intrigue me.
Last but not least, I started writing for Yuppee which can now sit alongside Kettle on my writing CV. I've only written one article for them so far but I got a few new followers on Twitter, and the article itself got a fair few 'Likes' and 'Retweets' so I was pretty impressed with how it was received!
Anyway, it's almost 8pm and I'm late to my boyfriend's so I'll be off, but I've got three weeks off uni and lots of things to rant about so you'll be hearing more of me within the week :)
xoxo
