So I now officially live in the lovely city of Salford. Salford doesn't have any nightclubs because the people here can't be trusted not to kill each other when they're sober, let alone drunk, the riots last month affected Salford more so than most places and the first night I was here I saw a guy storming down the street wielding a steel bat. One could say it isn't the nicest of places to live, and definitely not the safest.
When I first got into my flat and unpacked I didn't feel too bad because Connor was here to whisk me away to The Old Pint Pot, a surprisingly lovely little pub, where we met with some of his work colleagues and their friends who are also students at our university. It was a lovely night. However, the homesickness kicked in soon after: I'd be fine whenever I was around people but then I'd get back to my flat and feel the lump in my throat getting bigger and wish I was anywhere but here. I moved in before Fresher's week you see and it was really bloody quiet as a result of that. Only a couple of people had moved into my flat and I never saw them and it was the same with Connor's so it wasn't even as if I could spend every waking moment there to escape the eeriness of my own place.
Thankfully, as of last Monday I started to get a lot happier. I met a couple of the people on my course, became really good friends with Connor's flatmate Diane and met the others as they moved in, all of whom were lovely to me. I spent the days in the SU bar eating curly fries, apart from Friday when I went to the trade fair with Becca and Ashlee to get free t-shirts and cards for our fave nightclubs and I didn't have a single second to think about anything, it was great.
As far as Fresher's week went, I loved it. I went to loads of nightclubs for the first time (I'm from Manchester but apart from the Gay Village I've never really been out in it) such as 5th Ave, 42's and Satan's Hollow (which involved dressing my ex up as a woman), saw Jason Manford's brother perform live for 3 quid and spent a couple of nights hanging around Horlock Court meeting people from other apartments. It's surprisingly easy how quickly you meet people. This afternoon for example I was walking across Horlock Court on my own when Srijan, a lovely boy but someone I barely know banged on his kitchen window and threw his keys at me so that I could go and sit on the very hot benches in the kitchen. It's the same with everyone here. In college, if your friend brings their friend along somewhere, nobody makes the effort to speak to the poor person but in uni everyone's ridiculously friendly, I have lost count of the number of hands I've shaken this week and how many complete strangers I've had conversations with.
This afternoon I moved flats to Horlock Court which is actually on campus. It's right next to the gym, swimming pool, cafe and bar and has an amazing atmosphere. Tonight I went upstairs to meet my new flatmates, I gave off the worst first impression ever as I am the most easily intimidated person you will ever meet so I didn't speak unless people addressed their questions directly at me but fingers crossed I'll settle in soon enough, they seemed lovely anyway.
As for now, I need to sleep, I have to be up in 6 hours which will feel like a lie-in considering I've not had more than three hours sleep any night this week.
