Okay, two names that should probably never appear together but I have a couple of things I need to get off my chest and it's far too late to bother organising this thing in any other way. By the way, I know I haven't blogged in a while, I've been too busy stressing out about how to fit in working with uni and all the other shit I do to sit down with a massive coffee and get on people's nerves. But hopefully I'll have a new one up soon :)
Anyway, the first thing that I want to address is the Amanda Todd case. For those of you who don't know who this girl is, you can watch her video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ej7afkypUsc This video was made on the 7th of September of this year, just a month before she committed suicide. She was 15. The root cause of the bullying that eventually resulted in poor Amanda's suicide is this: she got her boobs out on webcam when she was 12. Um, so? Everyone seems to think that bullying is awful and that there is no justification for it, but in this instance, people seem to be saying the opposite. I've come across so many sites and forums where people who never even knew the girl are saying that she deserved to die because she was a slut. People are making joke sites about her and thirty seconds on Google informed me that apparently some people had a party when she died?
Now, I never met the girl. She could have been the bitchiest, most horrible person out there, but even if she was, is it ever okay to speak like that about somebody who has TAKEN THEIR OWN LIFE? No its fucking not. The worst part is that most of the people doing it are older people who should know better, people who, for some reason think it's okay to say these disgusting controversial things on the internet because of the anonymity the internet provides. I'm not expecting everybody to be touched by Amanda Todd's death. As harsh as it sounds, she IS just a statistic, and it would be naive of me to expect everybody to care that she's dead. However, there's indifference and there's nastiness, and there is no excuse in the world to be joking about a child who has taken her own life. Go play in traffic.
Second, Jimmy Savile. Now, I could go on for pages and pages about the stories surrounding the late Jimmy Savile but all that I really want to say on here is a response to the people that have been saying 'why bring it up now he's dead?' and bitching about how it's disrespectful to his memory and he 'can't answer for himself' so the girls must be lying.
Well firstly, it isn't just being spoken about now that he's dead. Girls made complaints AT THE TIME that the abuse was happening, and essentially got told to shut up and stop telling lies. A BBC documentary was made about the allegations but it was shelved because the BBC decided that it wouldn't be beneficial to them to show it as Savile was one of their biggest stars. Nurses at the hospital where Savile used to 'do his rounds' abusing girls knew about what was happening but felt too intimidated by Savile's power to say anything to their superiors, so instead told the patients to 'pretend they were asleep' when Savile came to visit.
Savile was interviewed multiple times about the allegations and openly made comments about how convicted paedophile Gary Glitter had 'done nothing wrong', as well as appearing in public with girls as young as 12.
Witnesses claim they've seen Savile kissing and fondling young girls in his dressing room, and reported him saying things such as Top of the Pops was his 'hunting ground' for fresh meat.
Now I'm very sorry but just because the BBC and the NHS were more concerned about making money off Savile than protecting the children they were responsible for, for over 30 YEARS, this should not mean that the women who have been abused and sometimes raped by Savile should be judged in any negative way just because the guy's breathed his last.
I'm glad he can't speak for himself. He doesn't need to. The evidence in itself speaks volumes and rather than being offended about insulting Savile's memory, I think we should be more concerned about insulting the testimonies of these poor women who have suffered at the hands of a man using his fame and power as a weapon.
People saying it isn't relevant need to stop being so disrespectful, because while it may not be relevant to YOU, who only cares about TOWIE and football, it's probably pretty fucking relevant to the women who have had to live with these horrendous truths their whole lives.
